NHS High Potential Scheme

The High Potential Scheme (HPS) is a 1 year talent scheme that will support leaders with potential to:

  • Progress into more senior roles within health and social care at a faster pace (5-8 years).
  • Gain cross-sector experience, building the foundations of a successful leadership career in the health and care sector.
  • Provide outstanding leadership for the future.
  • Utilise their high potential to lead improved patient and community care.
  • Harness skills to create more inclusive and compassionate cultures in the wider system.

The High Potential Scheme (HPS) aims to serve generations of patients, citizens, communities and staff by investing in our long-term talent and leadership pipelines. HPS assessment processes will identify, develop and support diverse cohorts of people from different professional disciplines and will focus on enabling those with the highest potential to succeed in senior roles, providing the support and development to accelerate their career progression. The scheme will ensure that Health and Social Care develop a stronger and more diverse cohort of aspirant senior leaders who will progress to senior executive roles by:

  • Identifying those people with the greatest potential to progress to senior executive roles and provide them with the support and development necessary to enable the acceleration and achievement of this.
  • Recruiting and developing cohorts of high potential leaders that are diverse and inclusive, and ensuring the scheme itself models inclusive leadership in its content, design, process and operations.
  • Establishing a valid, reliable, and inclusive framework for identifying and assessing 'high potential'.
  • Tracking the careers of participants during and after the scheme.

Eligibility

If you're a middle-level clinical or non-clinical leader with the potential and desire to progress into a senior executive role in Health and Care, the High Potential Scheme is perfect for you.

With the help of a career guide/coach, executive mentor and action learning set peers, you'll shape a one-year programme of experience focused on gaining practical leadership exposure in a range of roles and settings, alongside strategic experience through assignments, projects and shadowing.

Throughout the scheme you'll also develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to become an outstanding, compassionate and inclusive senior leader across the health and care system.

To be eligible you must be:

  • In a Health and Care funded role, based within Cornwall and Isles of Scilly
  • A middle-level leader (Agenda for Change bands 8a-c, or equivalent in other pay structures, clinical or non-clinical, salary typically in the range of £55,000 to £87,000 pro rata).
  • Interested in progressing your career to senior leadership roles, e.g. board or governing body level within the next 5-8 years.
  • Ready and willing to learn and develop your leadership skills and behaviours.
  • Able to demonstrate your compassionate and inclusive leadership values and style.

Equality, diversity and inclusion

A critical part of the success of the scheme will be its ability to increase diversity in the senior leadership pipeline and to enable transition into our regional talent pools.

As inclusion is at the heart of HPS, reflecting the richness and diversity of our workforce, applications from people with protected characteristics and members of underrepresented professions (for example allied health professionals, healthcare scientists and others) are particularly encouraged.

The High Potential Scheme application process

The High Potential Scheme (HPS) application process aims to be an accessible, developmental and insightful experience for each applicant. There are 3 stages to your application:

  1. Online application form capturing your motivations for applying for the scheme (carrying a 45% weighting).
  2. If your application form is successful, you will be invited to complete an Online Diagnostic Based on the KF Model of Potential (also carrying a 45% weighting). This assessment is designed to test your potential for executive leadership roles, rather than current readiness, and provides you with a report which will be accompanied by a video on how to interpret your results.
  3. The final stage will be an online pilot for an AI driven situational judgement test (carrying 10% weighting), which will provide you with feedback on your interactions.

How to apply

Before applying, you'll need to seek the support of your line manager and/or another senior leader (your HPS Sponsor) within your organisation. Line managers/sponsors will be required to support your learning and development throughout the scheme and will be required to read and sign the HPS terms and conditions document.
