Our medical team

We provide mental healthcare, adult physical healthcare and children's services across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. We work in innovative ways. We always think about the patient when we make decisions about how our services are run or how they are to develop. Our culture and values mean that everyone has a voice.

We work in multi-disciplinary teams based in integrated care areas. We care for patients in their homes, at community bases or in our hospitals. We continue to introduce new and exciting roles to our care teams.

Our main acute hospital is in Truro and is part of the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust. To deliver care, we also work with:

  • acute GP
  • same day emergency care
  • urgent care services

Benefits of working with our medical team

Appraisal, revalidation and pay progression

Revalidation is the way the General Medical Council is confident of a doctor's fitness to practice. It takes place every 5 years.

A doctor must be able to demonstrate that they have:

engagement with annual appraisal covering all their areas of work satisfactory feedback from colleagues and patients continuing professional development and quality improvement activity an awareness of serious incidents and complaints in which they have been named, and what they have learnt

Email our Medical Appraisal and Revalidation Manager or our Medical Appraisal Lead for more information.

Doctors in training have a separate process to the above.

Job planning

Annual job planning helps to identify the resources required to develop doable and enjoyable medical roles. It also gives you chance to discuss clinical and non-clinical opportunities and to engage in leadership, training, governance or quality improvement.

Pensions

Pension recycling is one of the ways we support our doctors to remain working with us.

Training and educational opportunities

Our director of medical education leads the Medical Education Department. The department provides education and continual professional development for medical students through to retired consultants wishing to return to work.

Our annual review of competency progression, and exam success rates, are enhanced by:

  • educational supervision
  • clinical assessment
  • skills practice
  • individual coaching, as needed

A weekly local teaching programme for core trainees complements the regional membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists' course. The programme is held on a Friday.

We have a separate educational programme for our higher trainees, general practitioners and foundation doctors.

Testimonials

Why Cornwall? More than cream teas and coastal walks

Cornwall is not just one of the best places to live in England, it's a dream come true for those seeking a balance between professional growth and personal wellbeing.

As an international medical graduate, I've had the privilege of working across the UK (London, Manchester, Gloucester). Yet, it's here in Cornwall that I've found a place where you can reflect, recharge, and perhaps even live out your Victorian dreams (yes, you read that right!).

Cornwall offers an unparalleled opportunity to grow as a psychiatrist and as a person.

Training tailored for success

The Trust is truly invested in its trainees. The training programme is as supportive as it is inspiring, with features that make it stand out.

Twice-a-week teaching

Dedicated teaching sessions twice a week ensure that core trainees have the knowledge and skills they need to excel in their exams and practice.

Seaside seminars

Imagine attending seminars in a beautiful hotel in Newquay, overlooking the stunning Cornish coastline. Yes, that's a real perk here!

Protected rest time

On-call shifts can be challenging, but the Trust ensures you have protected time to rest and recover during your shift, so you're always at your best.

Psychotherapy supervision

Individual psychotherapy supervision is another gem of the program, allowing you to hone your therapeutic skills under expert guidance.

Add to this opportunities for research, support for exams, and bursaries for academic courses, and you have a training program that helps you thrive.

In just a year of core training, I've managed to pass one of the Royal College exams, publish 3 research papers and contribute to a drug trial as a sub-investigator. I've also pursued an MA in social anthropology at Goldsmiths, University of London. Next year, I'm planning to do a PG diploma, because when bursaries are on offer, why not?

This might sound like a lot, but the workload is balanced, and the consultants here are wonderfully supportive. Without their guidance, none of this would have been possible. Cornwall is not just a place to train, it's a place to flourish.

Unique patients, unique insights

The patient cohort here is as unique as its landscapes. Years of socioeconomic challenges have shaped a population with complex mental health needs,. This offers you the chance to explore the profound impact of deprivation on mental wellbeing. It's an opportunity to work on the front lines of social psychiatry and make a real difference in people's lives. If you want to be an advocate for those often overlooked, Cornwall is your calling.

Training in Cornwall is not just about professional achievements. It's about finding a place where you can truly thrive. Whether it's the quiet solitude, the picturesque surroundings, or the chance to finally learn the proper way to eat a scone (jam first, let's not argue), Cornwall has something for everyone.
