St Barnabas Community Hospital

St Barnabas Community Hospital is a thriving hub and base for community teams.

Teams based there include:

  • Toressa District Nursing Team
  • East Home First Team
  • Acute Care at Home Team
  • Integrated Transfer of Care Team
  • podiatry
  • speech and language therapists

St Barnabas also has a room which can be used by the local primary care network for GP clinics. A primary care network describes GP practices who work together with other services in their local area.

History

The site used to have 9 inpatient beds, provide outpatient clinics and a minor injury unit. It did not have x-ray.

The minor injury unit used to open Monday to Friday, 8am and 3pm. Nurses from the ward ran the unit. Its limited use meant it was hard for nurses to maintain their skills. It closed in 2016 to allow the staff to focus on inpatient care.

The ward design and set up were reflective of its era and presented clinical challenges. The patients who were suitable for treatment as an inpatient was limited because the beds were split over 2 floors. This made it hard for staff to monitor the patients. This created a further challenge when staff had to leave the ward to treat a minor injury.

Recruitment challenges led the Trust move the inpatient care into the larger, modern facilities at Liskeard. This took place in February 2017.

Working with the community

We have met regularly with a group of local people. Called the Health Action Group. This includes representatives from county and town councillors, GPs, the Trust and other NHS organisations, and patients.

In 2024, the St Barnabas League of Friends voted to become a charity for community healthcare, looking at healthcare across the whole town. The organisations new name is St Barnabas Charity for Community Healthcare (charity number 266967.

This work paused during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This group has looked at where people from Saltash go when they leave an acute hospital like Derriford. For example, how many people go home, into a care home or what support they need.

We continue to meet.
