Sandra rolls back the years to be crowned world champion
A member of Trust staff has made a stunning comeback in sailing after being crowned world champion.
Sandra Sly is a business support supervisor at Falmouth Hospital. Away from work she is a keen sailor. After a break of 23 years from the sport, Sandra and her husband Stuart entered the 2026 Dart 18 World Championships in France.
Despite their time away from the sailing, the husband and wife duo rolled back the years as they sailed to a stunning win after a week of racing in Carnac.
The 25th Dart 18 World Championship took place from 4 to 10 July, 2026. It brought together some of the world's top crews for a series of races on Carnac Bay. The venue is renowned for its sea breezes and tough tidal conditions.
Competing against a strong international fleet of 140 boats, Sandra and Stuart produced some strong performances across 6 races. After a closely contested championship series, their results secured the overall title and the coveted World Championship crown.
The achievement is made even more remarkable as the pair returned to international competition after a break of 23 years.
Sandra said:
We are delighted. It was a very tense week with light and tricky conditions. We stayed focused, had consistent results in the top 10 and a bit of luck too. We did well 25 to 30 years ago so it's good to know that we've still got it!
