Wheelchair Service

The Wheelchair Service supports children with specialist wheelchair needs and adults who require with a standard or specialist wheelchair, living in Cornwall or the Isles of Scilly.

What does the Wheelchair Service provide?

Wheelchair Services assess people with long term mobility problems who require a wheelchair for longer than a period of 6 months. In these instances your mobility problems will affect your participation in everyday activities and a wheelchair will help to support your independence. All equipment is provided on a long term loan basis for as long as your clinical need requires it and you continue to meet the eligibility criteria. The provision of equipment is subject to the eligibility criteria as set by NHS Kernow Clinical Commissioning Group (KCCG). Children meeting the Children’s Wheelchair Eligibility Criteria who require a standard wheelchair should approach their community therapist for assessment and provision.

Our Wheelchair Service Information leaflet gives information and guidance of the Wheelchair Service and referral process. If you require a wheelchair or buggy for a short term clinical need, (six months or less) you should approach your GP or other Healthcare Professional involved in your care. They can arrange a short term loan chair. If you require a temporary wheelchair only for occasional use there are several local companies and charities that can provide chairs for hire or purchase. See for suggested contacts and guidance when choosing a suitable wheelchair.

Voucher Tariff

For those people that meet the NHS Wheelchair Service Eligibility Criteria there are 2 options of wheelchair provision through the NHS wheelchair service:

  • Option 1 issue of a free NHS long term loan wheelchair
  • Option 2 Issue of a voucher towards the cost of a wheelchair under the independent option.

The voucher scheme is intended to offer greater choice of wheelchairs to people with mobility needs. If the person using the chair would prefer a different type of wheelchair from that available through the NHS, as long as their choice meets their clinical needs, they can choose to have a voucher towards the cost and pay the difference themselves.
See Voucher Scheme Guidelines May 2015 V6 for further information.

Mobility Committee

The Mobility Committee links wheelchair users and their carers across Cornwall. Whenever possible a wheelchair service representative will be present at their meetings to discuss any views and opinions relating to the wheelchair service. If you are interested in joining the group or have any service related issues you would like raised via the group, then please contact the Chair, June Hackett at: junejubar@sky.com

Referrals

A GP or other NHS health professional can make a referral on behalf of anyone who does not have an NHS wheelchair.
If you are already an NHS wheelchair user, a self-referral for a review or accessories can be made.
All referrals should be made through Millbrook Healthcare 03333 218312
