Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation (also known as integrated therapy) is provided by occupational therapists and physiotherapists and other therapists to help people regain as much mobility and independence as possible.

What does the Rehabilitation Service provide?

The Rehabilitation Service is available to people over the age of 16:

  • have long term or chronic conditions
  • require rehabilitation following surgery or major trauma
  • have had a severe medical event such as a head injury
  • require therapy or equipment support to maintain independence
  • are terminally ill

The Service is delivered by a team of qualified and registered professionals, comprising Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists and support workers including Technical Instructors, Rehabilitation Technicians, Occupational Therapy Assistants and Technical Officers.

Referrals for rehabilitation, home adaptation and/or equipment come from a range of health. Once referred you will be assessed by a therapist who will recommend treatment and agree a goal orientated plan with you. The Service carries out home assessments, and where appropriate modification to your home or will supply equipment to help speed up your recovery.

Rehabilitation may include one or more of the following:

  • enablement of normal movement including walking, sitting, posture, eating and balance
  • muscle strengthening
  • assessment of walking aids
  • assessment and training in personal care, domestic, work and leisure skills to enable a safe return to your daily activities
  • pain management
  • cognitive and perceptual assessment
  • relaxation techniques to help with anxiety and depressin
  • driving assessment
  • assessment for a wheelchair
  • prosthetic limbs

The Service also provides you and your carers with education on the management of specific conditions for example arthritis.
