This Friday, say Hello Yellow

Young Minds Wear Yellow small

This Friday, 8 October, we would like you to wear yellow to support young people and their mental health.

Sunday 10 October is World Mental Health Day and to support young people, YoungMinds, a mental health charity for children and young people, are asking everyone to say #HelloYellow on the Friday.

Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust and Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust will be joining thousands of schools, offices and communities in the UK to ask their staff to dig out the yellow socks, tights, jumpers and shorts and send us their photos to share on social media. The purpose being to show our young people in Cornwall, they are not alone when it comes to mental health.

Dr Liz Myers, CAMHS Consultant Psychiatrist for CFT, said: “Young people's mental health is as important as their physical health if they are to develop into confident adults with positive social, emotional, thinking and communication skills. Recent research suggests as many as 1 in 6 school aged young people have a mental health problem. It’s really important we all stay connected and reach out if we are concerned. There is help available and it's OK to talk about any worries.”

Dr Sebastian Rotheray, CAMHS Consultant Psychiatrist for CFT, added: “It is so important that we do all we can to help our young people into an open and non-judgmental conversation about their mental health experiences. We know that more than 1 in 4 young people will experience significant mental distress and that suicide is a leading cause of death in this age group, often with the most lonely and isolated being at risk. So, starting the conversation and helping young people to feel less alone could be a vital part of saving lives”

Wearing yellow isn’t the only way we will be supporting the cause, as Becky Cooper, Clinical Effectiveness Co-ordinator at RCHT asked if the Tower Block could also be lit up. So, with help from TClarke, the Tower will be lit yellow this Friday evening.
