Christmas cheer comes to St Austell

In the name of Christmas spirit, last week over 50 socially isolated older persons from the St Austell area were invited to a special Christmas lunch, full of festive cheer.

Christmas cheer comes to St Austell

Lunch was hosted by the St Austell Golf Club and the St Austell Healthcare GP Practice, together with District Nurses from Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (CFT).

Once guests were collected from their homes by volunteers from the local community, including the St Austell Golf Club and the Merlin Project, they tucked into a sumptuous four course Christmas dinner with all the trimmings, including Christmas pudding and mince pies for dessert.

During and after lunch Christmas carols sung by the St Mewan CP Primary School Choir, years five and six, who recently won the Radio Cornwall Choir Championship; followed by Christmas games and a sing-a-long of favourite Christmas songs.

A spokesperson from the St Austell Golf Club and the St Austell Healthcare GP Practice commented: “we would like to thank all the volunteers on the day who ensured the guests had a wonderful time, especially those from St Austell Golf Club and St Austell Healthcare who cooked and served the meal and made the guests smile and laugh with a combination of humour and kindness, not forgetting the pouring of wine. All in all it was a great lunch enjoyed by the guests and the volunteers who are all looking forward to next year’s lunch.”

Gina Mayo who is the District Nurse Locality Team Lead for the St Austell and Par area commented “our St Austell Community Nurses were delighted to be able to work as part of the St Austell Healthcare team in this collaboration with St Austell Golf club and to support some of our socially isolated community members at this fantastic event.

“There was a great atmosphere and was emotional at times for all. It was a great opportunity to reconnect with what matters, which is not always primarily health needs. The event was well sponsored by local companies which added to the sense of community commitment to this cause. The collaboration hopes to run the event on an annual basis and we as a nursing team are already looking forward to the next one.”

Companies who offered generous donations towards the day included the St Austell Golf Club, St Austell Healthcare GP Practice, The Eden Project, Teddington Systems, St Austell Brewery, Patient Participation Group, Tewington Lodge of Freemasons, Go Jute, Homes of Cornwall, AA Quality Meats, Caterfood, Kelly’s of Cornwall, The Cornwall Hotel, St Mewan CP School, Total Produce, Bookers, TESCO and Cornwall Hospice Care.
