Epilepsy Training

The Specialist Epilepsy Nursing team provide Epilepsy Awareness Training regularly throughout the year. We run training sessions in the East and West of Cornwall.

Our Epilepsy Training is designed particularly for individuals who provide care and support to people who have a Learning Disability and Epilepsy. This is where our expertise lies as we are a specialist service who work specifically with people who have both of these diagnoses.

Please note: our training courses only focus on First Aid for seizures. We do not go into details regarding recovery position, choking etc. Our Epilepsy training should be accessed alongside a general first aid course.

Epilepsy Awareness Training

We provide Epilepsy Awareness Training for those who are new to care, new to working with someone who has epilepsy or who have not previously received any epilepsy training from our service.

Course Content: Epilepsy Awareness Training

The day is split into five separate modules:

  • An introduction to epilepsy: In this first module we will provide an introduction to epilepsy and seizure types. This is information which will underpin the care you provide to a person with Epilepsy.
  • Support for people with epilepsy: Applying the knowledge that you have gained from the first section, we will help you to understand your role in day to day support for a person with Epilepsy. This will include the process of epilepsy diagnosis, understanding triggers for seizures and assessing and minimising epilepsy risk.
  • First aid during seizures: This module will teach you what you need to do when someone has a seizure. We look at different scenarios to help reinforce this information.
  • Treatments: As someone who is providing care or support for a person with Epilepsy, it is useful for you to have an understanding of the possible treatment options for Epilepsy.
  • Rescue medication- Midazolam: Everyone requires training in order to administer rescue medication. This course will provide that training and teach you and how to administer Buccal Midazolam.

Once you have completed this training, you will receive a certificate. You will need to complete our refresher course in two years in order to continue administering Buccal Midazolam.

Course duration: full day session-  09:30-15:30

Course cost: £35 per person (family members can attend this course for free)

Epilepsy Refresher Training

Our Epilepsy refresher course will need to be completed every two years to ensure you remain qualified to administer Buccal Midazolam. This course is designed to refresh and reinforce your already existing knowledge of Epilepsy.

VNS

Rescue Medication- Midazolam

Course duration: half day session-  09:30-12:30

Bespoke Epilepsy Training

We provide Bespoke Epilepsy Training for staff teams or families. The content will be very similar to our Epilepsy Awareness Training, but will be designed to be relevant to the individual that you support.
