Health Staff Launch National Event

Two Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) from Cornwall have started a national social media movement.

Health Staff Launch National Event

Carrie Biddle, Therapy Clinical Governance, Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust (RCHT) and Quality Lead, Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (CFT) along with Rachael Brandreath, Dietetic Professional Lead, RCHT, came up with the idea to launch the very first AHP Appreciation Day, in line with the NHS’ AHPs Into Action agenda on the bus home from work.

A simple tweet from Carrie asking for followers to ‘give us a wave if you want to pick up on the #AHPsDay campaign bus’ saw AHPs from across the country wanting to get involved to celebrate the work carried out by dental hygienists, diagnostic medical sonographers, dietitians, medical technologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, radiographers, respiratory therapists, and speech language pathologists, to name a few.

After a ‘phenomenal’ response on Twitter, it was decided that Monday 15 October 2018 would be the very first AHP day after a @WeAHPs Twitter poll. Suzanne Rastrick, the Chief Allied Health Officer for England and her team will be supporting the event. On this date, AHPs across the country will ‘tweet’ their celebrations, tagging Carrie and Rachael’s hash-tag, #AHPsDay.

Carrie Biddle commented “Not only is the day a great way to showcase the work we do collaboratively with other health professionals, but a way to celebrate and recgonise the contributions made by AHPs across all sectors to improve the health and wellbeing of the general population. It is set to be a fantastic day.”

AHPs provide treatment and help to rehabilitate adults and children who are ill, have disabilities or special needs, to live life as fully as possible. They work across a wide range of different settings including the community, people’s homes, schools and hospitals.

“It’s very much about AHPs marking the day by doing something that is important and meaningful to them and to appreciate and celebrate the roles we do” added Rachael Brandreath.

Carrie and Rachael will be involved in a National WebEx taking place in July to share planning ideas with more details to follow soon.
